Do you want to define a second cellphone number to your Smartphone for FREE?
WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER IT?
Here are two facts that you should know:
Landline phones are a dying breed! Consider de-activating the landline and saving the money!
According to a recent survey, over 50% of the US households use only cellphones!
The problem is everyone wants to know how to call you. Do you really want to give your cell phone number to businesses and strangers? Do you want to risk more telemarketing or unwanted calls? Do you want to keep your privacy?
Google has a FREE service that allows you to have a second mobile number active on your Smartphone. It is called GOOGLE VOICE and these are the benefits and features:
Unlike other FREE apps such as Skype and WhatsApp that require both parties to use the same service with Google Voice, you can call any number in the United States for FREE!
You can initiate a phone call or receive a phone call via your carrier's network or Wi-Fi connection in the US.
You can send and receive SMS messages via your carrier's network or Wi-Fi connection.
You can send and receive MMS messages via your carrier's network or Wi-Fi connection.
To initiate a conference call, Press 5 to bring another phone number into the conversation.
Received calls can be recorded by Pressing 4. All parties will hear the "Call Recording on" announcement and the conversation will now be recorded!
You can block phone numbers.
Both the Phone Calls, SMS and MMS Messages can be forwarded to your cell phone so that you can receive all notifications on one device.
If you are ever in a situation where you cannot locate your Smartphone but you have an IPad, you can use the FREE Google Hangouts APP to call any U.S phone number using the IPad's carrier's cellular network or a Wi-Fi connection! This feature alone is a great backup plan if your Smartphone is lost or stolen because you can still make phone calls using your IPad!
If you are ever out of the country and as long as you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can call the U.S for FREE by dialing the appropriate international dialing code.
YOU KEEP YOUR PRIVACY by not giving out your real cell phone number to strangers and businesses!
You can also use this second cell phone number for a business and determine the hours when you want the calls to go to Voice Mail.
HOW TO SIGN UP?
All you need is a FREE Gmail Email address. If you do not have a Gmail address, you can sign up for one at www.gmail.com
Once you have a Gmail Email address and password, use a computer or laptop browser and go to www.google.com/voice/ and activate a new service. Here in the Dallas - Forth Worth metroplex, all 214 area code numbers have already been taken but, there are still 972, 469, and 817 area code phone numbers available.
You will have the option to select a phone number that has certain values (i.e. you may want your phone number to end with a certain sequence like 1303 or 4237 etc so it is easy to remember).
Once you have a new Google Voice number and it is associated with your Gmail email account then:
Forward your Google Number to your Cell Phone number.
Change any of the other Google Settings
You will have to download Apps from either the Apple or Android App Store. On the IOS App Store, I recommend these Apps:
If you are just starting to use this service, download the FREEGoogle Voice App. Changes to the Google Voice settings can ONLY be made by login in using your web browser and, the User Interface (UI) is not very intuitive.
If you want to be able to change the Google Voice settings from the App itself, download the GV Connect App. The App costs $2.99 and there is a onetime fee of $0.99 to use the new MMS features. The User Interface (UI) is very simple and easy to understand.
If you have an IPad, download the Google Hangouts APP so that you can still make phone calls in case your Smartphone is lost or stolen.
One you have downloaded the APPs, login using the Gmail email account and password and configure the settings.
